Surrey Classics FC v Britannia

Classics end in style ..........
The Classics entertained Britannia in the last scheduled league match of the season. The visitors brought out a strong squad for the fixture and the Classics had flown in several of their foreign based players for the match. Dave Moore had just returned from a spell at Oldham Athletic, Garry Hackel had flown in from a loan spell in Mexico, Danny Jensen had been on international duty in Trinidad and Tobago while Dean Herbert, the 'Lyndon Flash,' had had to cross the border from the USA to make the game.

The game started out at a fast pace and a clever flowing move in the tenth minute between Gene Crowley, Gordie Macklin and Chris Arcari resulted in the latter firing the ball wide of the goal in what was so far the best scoring opportunity of the game. Five minutes later the home side broke the deadlock. A bad dead ball kick form the Britannia goalkeeper was well intercepted by Macklin and he carried the ball forward towards the net. He rounded the advancing keeper to score a fine individual goal, a goal which made him the first player to hit double figures this season.

On the half hour mark came another textbook finish to make it 2-0. A hard and low left wing cross from Jim Eden was powerfully headed home by Arcari past a goalkeeper who must have thought that a whirlwind had arrived. The majority of the possession remained with the Classics and Britannia did little to test out Hackel in the home goal.

Two minutes into the second half another flowing move ended when G. Crowley fired the ball into the side netting. The miss brought a spontanious chorus of oohs and aaahs from the Gene Crowley fan club who had set up their base camp on the sideline. Britannia started the second half at a faster pace and tried to put pressure on the home side. The ploy worked and they pulled back a goal on the hour mark. With the Classics defence having a momentary lapse the ex-Classic player, Doug Smith, headed the ball forward from the edge of the penalty area. The ball landed nicely at the feet on a Britannia forward who poked the ball home past a bemused Hackel who was still practising his Mexican wave.

Another good move in the 64th. minute almost restored the two goal cushion. The move ended when Arcari fired hard and low to the left of the keeper who made a good save to push the ball out for a corner. The resulting corner landed on the head of Chuck McGill but unfortunately it hit the square part and went well over the bar.

The game was put beyond doubt when Jensen sent Pat Rohla away for a one on one with the keeper. There could only be one winner and Rohla waltzed around the diving keeper to calmly stroke the ball home to secure a convincing win.

Final Score 3-1 (2-0)
