Classics pull out the stops........
It was a rather depleted Classics team that travelled to Richmond to take on United. With players suffering from knocks, others out injured and some away on holiday, Dave Moore was flown in from international duty to bolster the numbers. The game began at a slow pace with the first real chance falling to the Classics in the 17th minute. It came to Wayne Ferguson, but it appeared that he had been watching the Pat O'Krane 'clinical shot taking' videos on YouTube before the the game as he blasted his shot well over the bar. It did take a slight deflection so the Classics had their first corner. Willie Dixon took the kick and it landed on Lorenzo Arcari's head but he headed just over. A good move forward in the 29th minute was started by Mike Deeley, the ball moved to L. Arcari who took a shot on goal. The ball deflected back to Jimmy Butler who pummelled the ball goalwards and it took a wicked deflection as it hit the home keeper on its way into the net. Alan Massender tried his luck in the 37th minute but, again, the ball went well over the bar. Just before the break, United took a free kick which eventually reached one of their forwards - fortunately, for the visitors, the ball was struck just wide of the far post.

United equalised ten minutes into the second half after a left wing break was pulled back into the box and a grateful striker was on hand to poke the ball home past Jason Clegg. Deeley threaded a fine ball through to Dixon in the 60th minute who centred the ball to Ferguson who then headed the ball wide of the post. Another chance fell to Ferguson five minutes later but his effort was deflected for a corner. From the kick, the resulting melee witnessed O'Krane striking the ball goalwards but it came back off a defender to Massender who struck the ball over the bar. With ten minutes remaining Dixon gave the ball to Deeley who laid it off to O'Krane who rifled the ball decisively home into the left hand corner of the net. It was well noted by the spectators that this shot went UNDER the bar. With three minues remaining the game was wrapped up and posted off after O'Krane was left with the ball just 10 yards into the opposing half. He turned and beat a player before running almost the length of half a field before he emphatically dispatched the ball with great power, again to the left of the keeper, and into the net. His two goals brought the game alive! The result was satisfying in the fact that the team did not play particularly well but they ground out the required result - a satisfying day all round.
